Amidst unpredictable climate, often harsh sunshine of Moroto, where the sun beats down mercilessly on the boda boda stages, riders like Benedict Lochugae and Samuel Okello spent endless hours shielding themselves under flimsy cloths, veranders or sparse trees, waiting for passengers amid the heat.
To celebrate what they have achieved since liberation, Uganda People’s Defence Forces-UPDF gave back to the boda boda community of Moroto Municipality by constructing two shelters designed to withstand the harsh sun and rains. This was a heartfelt donation from the Forces as part of their ongoing civil-military cooperation to support the community and celebrate Tarehe Sita.
The excitement was palpable. Boda boda rider Lokiru beamed as he touched the cool metal roof stating that for years, they’ve been frying like chapati under the sun but now they can rest properly and serve more passengers. His colleague Apuun added, wiping sweat from his brow, that no more running to hide when it rains suddenly as the shade means they work longer, earn better, and feel respected.
Simon Peter Korobe, the chairperson of the Moroto Boda Boda Association, said the army had supported them by constructing two boda boda stages within the municipality, which he termed as a significant achievement.

Passengers were equally thrilled. Iriama Suzan Nakiru, a market vendor at Moroto main Market who relies on boda bodas daily, said, she used to stand in the open heat waiting, feeling dizzy sometimes but with these shades, it’s comfortable and safe. Sylvia Korobe, a student of Moroto Parents Secondary School said that the wait feels shorter now, and she will be protected from the harsh weather due to the big relief extended by the UPDF.
Moroto Municipal Mayor Ismail Mohammed, present at the event, praised the initiative stating that the donation uplifts the boda boda sector, a backbone of transport in the Municipality and it shows the UPDF’s commitment to development and peace in Karamoja.

UPDF 3 Division commander, Major General Wilberforce Sserunkuma Karate stated that through such gestures, they strengthen ties with the community because protecting and empowering civilians is part of the UPDF’s mandate.
