Two suspects arrested in a crackdown on motorcycle theft Napak

The Police in Napak on Sunday arrested two suspects from Kasile village, Iriiri Sub County in connection to suspected theft of motorcycles. The suspects, whose names have been withheld, are currently assisting the police with the investigations.

During the operation, the police recovered four suspected stolen Kenyan motorcycles with registration numbers KMGJ 851W, KMGH 841X, KMGM 912X, and KMFO 146Y, along with 28 Kenyan number plates and nine suspected fake logbooks.

According to Mt. Moroto Region Police spokesperson, Inspector of police-IP Mike Longole, the prime suspect in the case is still at large, but they are working tirelessly to apprehend him. He commended the efforts of officers in Napak for their diligence and commitment to securing the communities.

Longole said as Police, they will continue to work hard to ensure that those who engage in criminal activities are brought to justice and called on the entire public to be vigilant and share any suspicious activities within their communities that intend to promote criminality.

As the holiday period approaches, incidents of motorcycle thefts tend to increase, with boda boda riders being the main target. Just last week in Moroto district, an attempted theft of a motorcycle was thwarted by individuals returning from club in Kambizi. The suspected thieves fled and left the motorcycle along the road, and it was handed over to the owner after a case was reported to police.

According to the Police 2024 annual crime report, a total of 6,311 cases of Theft of Motorcycles were reported to Police compared to 6,065 cases reported in 2023, giving an increase of 4.1% Motorcycle Thefts in the whole year. A total of 11,214 Motorcycles were reported stolen, out of which, 2,355 were recovered, 1,527 were found abandoned, while 7,332 were not recovered.

Kampala Metropolitan Police-KMP North registered the highest number of Motorcycle Thefts (949 cases), followed by KMP South with 681 cases, KMP East with 470 cases, Albertine with 407 cases, North Kyoga with 341 cases and Rwizi with 339 cases.
