As Karamoja sub-region starts to enjoy relevant peace and security, the Roman Catholic Dioceses of Kotido and Moroto together with the Catholic Lawyers society international (CLASI) working jointly with the government of the Republic of Uganda is spearheading the establishment of Karamoja Peace and Technology university (KAPATU).
Addressing journalists at the University headquarters in Christ the King parish, in Losilang, Kotido Municipality, Dan Emmanuel Epau the deputy university secretary said the University is a transformational project established to address the historical gaps in education, peace building, technology and development for Karamoja and the greater Ateker region.
He added that the University was conceived in 2014, and formally launched in 3023 at the headquarters of the Uganda Episcopal Conference at St. Augustine’s Institute Nsambya and granted letter of interim Authority on 19 Aprit2024.
According to Epau, the University has a vision of becoming a globally recognized centre for peace building, innovation and inclusive development rooted in the cultural strength and resilience of Karamoja and Ateker.
Anthony Mwije the Dean for the faculty of Agriculture says the University will kick-start its operations with six faculties which includes, health science, Agriculture and environmental science, Engineering and Technology, Education, Peace and Diplomacy and school of Law with courses ranging from youth Skilling especially for the Karacunas, certificate to PhD with strong emphasis on hands-on training.
Charles Ichogor the Resident District Commission (RDC) of Kotido district says the University is the fast of its kind in the region dedicated to fulfilling government commitment under the bed and NRM 10 point program and correcting historical imbalances. He added that the coming of the University will act as the final bullet to the insecurity in the region since the youth will be equipped with skills that will earn them a living.
