Police Arrest medic in Alleged Theft of Essential Medicines at Amudat Hospital

By Timothy Eodu

Police in Amudat District have arrested a health worker at Amudat Hospital following the alleged theft of government-supplied medicines and medical consumables. The arrest highlights ongoing concerns over the protection of scarce medical resources in a region already grappling with significant health challenges.

Amudat District and the broader Karamoja sub-region face persistent health pressures, including high burdens of malaria, malnutrition, food insecurity, and limited access to essential care. In this context, the availability of basic supplies such as intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and diagnostic tools is vital for treating vulnerable populations, particularly mothers, children, and those affected by recurrent disease outbreaks and nutritional deficits.

According to IP Longole Mike, the Police Public Relations Officer Mt. Moroto Region / ASTU, hospital security personnel observed a staff member exiting the premises carrying a sack On 5 June 2026 at approximately 04:00 hours. He said the security guards, accompanied by a nurse on duty, followed the suspect to his residence within the nurses’ quarters, where they recovered assorted medical supplies and the hospital administration was promptly notified, and police responded swiftly to the scene.

The suspect identified as Chemayek Alex, 42, an Anaesthetic Officer at Amudat Hospital, was arrested and a case of Theft of Government Property registered vides Amudat CRB 039/2026. Longole stated that items recovered and exhibited included 8 bottles of Sodium Chloride (Normal Saline), 1 bottle of Ringer’s Lactate, 1 box of Malaria Rapid Diagnostic Test kits, 1 box of surgical gloves, 20 pieces of Ceftriaxone injection and 2 bundles of Zinc Oxide.

These supplies are essential for managing dehydration, infections, malaria diagnosis and treatment, and basic surgical procedures — all critical in a region where healthcare access remains strained. Longole said the suspect remains in police custody as statements have been obtained from witnesses, the scene documented, and police are assessing the value of the recovered items. He added that the case file will be submitted to the Resident State Attorney for legal advice.

Longole commends the vigilance of the hospital security team and staff whose prompt action led to the recovery of the medicines. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to collaborating with hospital management to safeguard public medical supplies and prevent disruptions to patient care as further investigations continue.
