Four Opposition parliamentary candidates cleared for 2026 general Elections in Moroto district

Following a two-day country wide nomination exercise for parliamentarians by the Electoral commission that commenced on Wednesday 22 and ended on Thursday 23 of October 2025, the electoral commission of Moroto district has cleared a total of fifteen candidates to appear in the ballot, come January 2026.

The exercise which was overseen by the Moroto district Electoral Commission Administrator/ Returning Officer, Esther Immaculate Ajwang the Moroto district election officer ended successful with four out of the fifteen cleared candidates coming two strong opposition parties in the country.

While addressing the media on Thursday evening after the nomination exercise Ms Ajwang confirmed that out of the fifteen nominated candidates four of them are from the ruling NRM party, Two from Forum for Democratic Change- FDC, Two are National Unity Platform while the remaining Seven were independents with a majority of them NRM leaning candidates who recently lost in the party primary elections.

The FDC nominated candidates include Hellen Kiyai who is vying for Moroto district woman Mp and Angella Zainab Ali vying for Moroto Municipality seat. For NUP they include, George Francis Ojamuge vying for Moroto Municipality seat and Robert Logit vying for Tepeth County seat.

 

For NRM party, the dully nominated candidates are Francis Adome Lorika who is vying to retain his Moroto Municipality seat, Stella Atyang who is also hoping to extend her stay as the woman MP for Moroto district for the third term, John Baptist Lokii the incumbent Matheniko county who also serves as the newly elected NRM Vice chairperson for Karamoja and Micheal Wilson Lokawua who is vying for Tepeth county seat.

Those coming as independent candidates are Bonisca Bonic Apuun vying for Woman mp Moroto, Ceasar Akol for Matheniko County, Fred Angella Moroto Municipality, Lucy Chegem Apio vying for woman Mp Moroto district, Albert Lokoru the incumbent for Tepeth County, Dean Raheal Lotukei vying for Matheniko County and Charlas Adiaka Achotoi vying for Moroto Municipality.

However during nominations, the opposition aspirants challenged both the Electoral Commission and security Agencies to give fair treatment to all the candidates during campaigning period which will kick-start on the 10th of November and end on the 13th of January 2026.

Helen Kiyai who is vying for woman mp seat for Moroto district said as opposition candidates they are ready to follow the guidelines set by electoral commission and security department during campaigning season. She also challenged the people of Moroto to vote for candidates who will speak for them in parliament and bring development to the district, rather than voting for parties or people with money.

Meanwhile, John Baptist Lokii the NRM Vice chairperson for Karamoja region called upon the people of Moroto district to vote for the NRM candidates from the grass root level up to presidential level as a way of attracting more development in the district. According to Lokii the NRM government which is led by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is committed to bringing in more development programs to Karamoja if they retain power in the 2026 general elections.

On the use of money by aspirants during the campaigning period which Ms Ajwang termed as bribe of voters, she asked all aspirants to desist from it as it’s against the law of the commission. She also assured the opposition candidates of their safety and freedom during campaigning period.
